The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry: Abba, Father. – Romans 8:15
One of the most important things in the life of little children is to know that they are protected, cared for and loved by their parents. They are totally dependent on them. The spiritual life is also like that. As children of God, we are totally dependent on our Father in heaven.
To be dependent means that:
- you need help and support;
- you are subordinate to someone else;
- your life is determined by someone else.
In other words: you are unable to live and function without this person.
A child of God knows that he or she cannot live and function without Jesus Christ. This is different in our society today: you have to be able to do all on your own; ‘I will do this my way, I will do it as I please.’ However, the Christian knows that it is impossible to overcome difficulties without the power of Jesus and the help of the Holy Spirit.
At one point the disciples were arguing about who would be the most important. ‘He called a little child to Him, and placed the child among them. And He said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven’ (Matthew 18:2-4). In other words: ‘Forget who is the best or the most important one. If you do not start thinking differently, you will not even make it.’
You need Jesus
What does Jesus mean by: ‘become like little children’? He wanted to show them that without Him they were just as helpless and powerless as that child. You cannot do it by yourself. Let’s learn this lesson: we need Jesus!
