And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” – Matthew 6:5-6
The Pharisees prayed in the temple and on the squares, but their hearts were not sincere. It was all just fake. God ill not answer you if you pray, while there are things in your heart which are not good, and you do not change them first. He hates such prayers.
In God’s presence
In Mark 11:25-26 Jesus says: ‘And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.’ God says in Matthew 15:8: ‘These people honor Me with their lips, but their hearts are far from Me.’ Praying is to be in touch with God; to have intimate contact with Him. Praying is being in His presence. That is only possible if you come to Him with a sincere and pure heart.
‘Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus… Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water’(Hebrews 10:19,22). Words are important, but the heart with which we pray is much more important.
