The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you — they are full of the Spirit and life. – John 6:63
In the days of Jesus there were people who admired the Lord Jesus as a man of flesh and blood because of the things He said and did. They saw a man different from the other preachers and spiritual leaders of those days. They looked up to the Lord Jesus as people admire artists nowadays.
Many wanted Him to be on the throne as their king. Even His disciples said: ‘Lord, are You at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel’? They thought He would sit on the throne of David. The Lord Jesus says: ‘The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you — they are full of the Spirit and life.’ In other words, Jesus says: ‘The words I speak to you will do you good, not My appearance of flesh and blood.’
Jesus made this comment in connection with some verses written before this one. There was confusion because the Lord Jesus told them to eat from His body and drink from His blood. People thought they should really eat the body of Jesus and drink His blood. Jesus did not mean this and today we would even laugh about such idea.
Yet today there are millions of people who still think the same way when they celebrate the Holy Communion. They believe that the piece of bread – the host – really changes into the body of Christ. This is called transubstantiation. It is also believed that the wine turns into the blood of Jesus.
However, the Lord Jesus says: ‘The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing.’ It is the Word of the Lord Jesus which brings a change in man. Start to praise and worship God in spirit and in truth. God is looking forward to this. The dead cannot praise Him.
Have you been made alive by the Holy Spirit? Are you filled with the power of the Holy Spirit? Are you led by Him? Because the flesh counts for nothing.
