But He has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself… so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for Him. – Hebrews 9:26-28
There are two comings of the Lord Jesus to the earth. When Adam and Eve sinned, a gap arose between God and people. There was a separation between heaven and earth.
The first coming
At the first coming of Jesus Christ, the Father laid a bridge between heaven and earth through His Son. Through that bridge it was possible for God to come to man and for man to go to God again.
Jesus says: ‘I am the way and the truth and the life.’ The next part is even more important: ‘No one comes to the Father except through Me.’
The cross of Jesus
Jesus is the Bridge over which we can come in the presence of God. The cross is the solid pillar under this bridge. You first have to go to the cross of Jesus if you want to walk over this bridge. Otherwise there is still that unbridgeable gap between God and you.
Our peace is because of the first coming of Jesus: we have received forgiveness through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.
The second coming
At His second coming we will not kneel at the manger to see Baby Jesus, but we kneel for His majesty, for His glory, for He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. At His first coming, He came as a little baby born in a stable. He came as a lamb that would be slaughtered to take away sin. He built the bridge between God and people. At His second coming, Jesus will come as the Triumphator, as the Overcomer, as the King and as the Judge.
Jesus is the only way
There is no other way to be saved, no other way to come to God than only through faith in Jesus’ sacrifice. He is the only true Way, He is the Bridge to God.
